SEGUNDA STYLE: MY LADY TIE

So, I thought today would be a good day for segunda style. For my newer readers, 'Segunda' is just 'thrift store' except growing up we didn't call them thrift stores, we called them (all my cousins and family say it with me) 'Segundas'. So now you're all educated and maybe even a little closer to becoming Mexican...I don't know if that's true, but I'm willing to let you in the club.

I'm particularly fond of this outfit, it is all (w/ the exception of undergarments) segunda. Head to toe, about $15. What do you think of my lady tie? I was trying to channel a little Dian Keaton, but I think I may have missed a little and hit troop Beverly Hills.

I use to be a girl scout though, so I guess I can't help but exude troopiness. But seriously, loving my lady tie. I saw it at my last segunda venture sitting lonely and untouched on the rack. I circled it like a hawk and before anyone else could even notice it, it was safely sitting in my basket. I'm a lady tie rescuer. That's really all there is to it.
The blouse was a school uniform shirt, I cut the sleeves off making it more seasonal.
The skirt went to about my calves, and I cut that too. Originally I was going to hem it, but I was too eager to wear it, and then I realized, I kinda like the juxtaposition of an unfinished skirt with a nice blouse.

and there it is..my Segunda Style. Thinking you might want a lady tie of your own? Well you can't have mine, but I do know a lovely Mobile Boutique that happens to be selling some. That's right, if you're in the Sacramento area, check out my sister's truck Gypsy, she's got the goods.
Today's Reflection:
I don't always feel lovely, I have those moments when I look in the mirror and say or think things that are just rotten. If the enemy attacks, then he seems to linger in my mirror. Isn't that silly? Isn't it crazy how we are clearly all uniquely and beautifully made, yet still some of us want to argue this point internally. God, standing right there watching us, asking "Is this going to take long because I've got things I need you to do" Silly.

“What sorrow awaits those who argue with their Creator.  Does a clay pot argue with its maker? Does the clay dispute with the one who shapes it, saying ‘Stop, you’re doing it wrong!’ Does the pot exclaim ‘How clumsy can you be?  How terrible it would be if a newborn baby said to its father, ‘Why was I born?’ or if it said to its mother, ‘Why did you make me this way?’"
-Isaiah 45:9-10

SEGUNDA STYLE: SEMI-HOME MADE

You know, I can be extremely impatient at times. Sewing my own clothes often challenges me in this area. I'm proud of myself when I've finished something that is wearable and adorable. I won't lie to you, I've had many sewing projects go awry, many dresses and skirts just come out funky (and not in the oh so hip way!). So today, I am proud to share my semi-home made outfit! This little skirt was made by lil' ol' me...and the best part, it was extremely simple and quick!. My shirt was purchased for about $3 at the fabric store. And to show you that you can find great accessories at the segunda, my shoes (my current favorites!) and my bag were all segunda finds!
So there it is, my semi-home made segunda style the kind that hopefully makes that seamstress mother of mine proud!

Today's Reflection:
Just a little encouragement for myself and those who may be needing it, because sometimes I need to remind myself! You are loved and no matter what you are wearing, you are treasured and a beautiful creation. The same God who creates the Earth and the Heavens created you and calls you his!

"But now, thus says the Lord, who created you, O Jacob, And He who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; You are Mine."

SEGUNDA STYLE

I'll have to admit, these are becoming some of my favorite post. Not only because I enjoy the thrill of finding something I love at the segunda (thrift store) but because 'segunda' is easily becoming my answer for whenever anyone ask me, "where did you get that?" It's spring and I adore dresses, so today's find is a comfy little dress...

Let's face it, this dress does it's job, I'm not walking a catwalk, I'm walking in the park with my loves. I'm not running to a meeting, catching a train, I'm running after my little guy and catching him to get me some hugs...and I love me some Henry hugs!
Today's Reflection:
No matter what I do, how I look, what I wear, the goal remains the same. My heart strives after the same thing, my focus is on the woman I am becoming. I am not perfect, I will never be, but I will search God's word and try to become the woman he has created me to be. My worth is not measured by a bank account or price tag on my clothing.

"Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies. The heart of her husband safely trust her; so he will have no lack of gain. She does him good and not evil all the days of her life"
-Proverbs 31:10-12

SEGUNDA STYLE

I got Spring fever the first day the sun decided to come out from hiding behind rain clouds. I quickly headed to my favorite segunda (thrift store, for my newer readers) and scored exactly what I needed to quench my thirst for spring!
Best of all, and some of my fellow mommies might appreciate this, it has pockets! Huge pockets, the kind that can easily hide 3 cars or a couple of choo choo trains...

I think about why I get so excited when I score something I adore and feel pretty in at the segunda. Realizing that most things if not everything is a God thing, I feel like he's nodding at me, saying "Don't worry, I'll take care of you." I see people in their name brand clothes, killer shoes, beautiful accessories, I know it's not in the budget for me. Just take a look in the magazines and even their "Steals" cost at least $40. Please, don't mistake me I don't think it's wrong to spend that much, I just know, now is not the time for me to do it. So I try not to lust after the things I can not have and be happy with the things I can, the little blessings and "finds" that God sends my way!
Today's Reflection:
Sometimes God calls us to go down a certain path which can take us out of our comfort zone or cause us to make changes in our life. When I decided to become a stay at home mom I wasn't sure all that it would entail. I could have never guessed how much sacrifice it would take and if I could even make those sacrifices. Here's what I know, when God is calling you to do something, don't worry about the little things, he'll take care of them for you. God knows what I will encounter and what I will need, little and big and he will take care of those things for me.

"Moses raised another objection to God: "Master, please, I don't talk well. I've never been good with words, neither before nor after you spoke to me. I stutter and stammer."
God said, "And who do you think made the human mouth? And who makes some mute, some deaf, some sighted, some blind? Isn't it I, God? So, get going. I'll be right there with you—with your mouth! I'll be right there to teach you what to say."
-Exodus 4:10-12 (The Message)

LIFE AND SEGUNDA STYLE

Originally I was going to write about my son's new fascination with the game of LIFE. I'm not speaking metaphorically, he really likes the game of LIFE! It's currently his new favorite thing. He likes the red car. As I was writing I had a bit of a brain..fart..(I think that's how Hemingway would put it) and from that I suddenly had a tugging on my heart to write about something else. Sometimes when that happens you need to just go with it. Sometimes it's something you need, sometimes it's something someone else needs, but either way I try to trust that tugging.

I'm doing this feature, called 'Segunda Style' to share with other women, that you don't have to break the bank to look stylish. I don't pretend to be an expert on style and I know some of the things I wear, some won't like or wouldn't ever wear. The purpose of it is to show, that if you buy a dress for $200 or a dress for $2 at a thrift store, it's the women wearing the dress that matters. It's the women that puts it on that has the real value. We are far more valuable than the clothes or jewelry we put on. So, I try not to spend too much time or money on my clothes (this is my conviction, I don't expect everyone else to share it). I try to be resourceful and still keep a bit of my style without letting what I wear define who I am. Instead of building up a beautiful wardrobe I am trying to build up the character of a good woman, a good mom, and a good wife. I did not always think like this, and there still are days when I revert back into my old way of thinking that I need to look beautiful to be beautiful, but slowly my heart is changing and I'm learning that I was 'wonderfully made' (Psalm 139:14)

So here is this weeks 'Segunda Style'...a vintage green dress thrifted for about $3. It went to my ankles when I got it, so I shortened it and added some of my favorite accessories, my little black jacket, black tights, elf shoes, and the hunger games...
Today's Reflection:
"Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight."
-1 Peter 3: 3-4

Thank you daddy for reminding me of this scripture!

SEGUNDA STYLE

Just trying something different, in addition to my normal daily post. This is a new feature I'm trying out, called 'Segunda Style'. Most of you know Steve and I make an effort to be wise with our money being a single income family. I'm sure other moms can identify with the financial changes having children can bring as well as the physical changes. 'Segunda Style' is a feature sharing my second hand finds and showing that you don't have to break the bank to still be girly and have a little style!

Today's Segunda Style is a little floral dress I found at the Goodwill! I hemmed it and added a little belt so that it would fit my 'body type' (short and curvy aka chunky) a little better.

The perfect little dress for hanging with your silly nephew!
and to not let anything go to waste and stretch my resources, I used the scraps from the bottom of the dress to make a bow to accessorize another dress.
So that's it! Our first 'Segunda Style' what did you think? Always nice to try something new...right?
